Ethereum Gold Rush: Are Companies Creating a Crypto Bubble on Wall Street?
The Golden Age of Crypto: Or Is It a Bubble Waiting to Pop?
The crypto world is buzzing after President Trump signed the GENIUS Stablecoin Act into law, calling it the beginning of a new “golden age” for America and digital finance. This major policy shift promises more clarity and support for blockchain innovation—and corporate America is already jumping on the crypto bandwagon.
But is this excitement creating a dangerous bubble in the Bitcoin and Ethereum markets?
Treasury Strategy Mania: From Bitcoin to Ethereum
Bitcoin’s Pioneer – Strategy and Saylor
It all started with Michael Saylor and his company, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy). Since 2020, Saylor has been aggressively buying Bitcoin using a mix of common stock, preferred shares, and debt. His goal? Turn his software firm into a massive crypto holding company.
Strategy now holds over 600,000 BTC, worth more than $70 billion, and has inspired a wave of imitators.
Ethereum Joins the Party
Now, Ethereum is the next target.
Firms like Sharplink Gaming (co-founded by Ethereum’s Joe Lubin) and BitMine Immersion Technologies (chaired by Tom Lee) are building massive Ethereum treasuries. Their approach? Issue shares and use the cash to buy ETH before traditional finance (TradFi) catches up.
Ethereum surged 40% in two weeks, partly driven by this aggressive buying.
Is This Smart Capital Allocation—or a Risky Crypto Bubble
What Investors Are Saying
According to Rob Hadick, General Partner at Dragonfly Capital, the excitement is turning into “fervor” or even “froth.”
He said his investor group received six calls in one weekend—all pitching crypto treasury deals. That level of hype has him cautious.
“I think it continues to pick up pace as people are making money… but we need to be thoughtful as an industry about what we’re promoting,” Hadick told Coinage.
Big Gains, Big Fees—and Big Questions
Follow the Money
These crypto treasury companies aren’t just making money from crypto—they’re making money from you.
According to Hadick, some of these deals include “promotes” (insider compensation fees) as high as 25%. That means insiders can make $1.25 for every $1 raised—an unusually high margin in traditional finance.
As long as crypto prices stay high, few complain. But if the market turns, these fees could hurt shareholders badly.
The Ethereum Pitch: Real World Assets and Tokenization
Why are companies betting big on Ethereum?
Tom Lee explains: “Ethereum is the Layer-1 blockchain where real-world assets are becoming tokenized.” That includes everything from real estate to stablecoins.
The logic: once big banks like JPMorgan and institutions like Amazon or Walmart start using Ethereum for their stablecoin projects, demand for ETH will skyrocket. And these treasury companies want to front-run that demand.
Bubble or Breakthrough
On the surface, this strategy makes sense: buy crypto while it’s cheap, ride the wave, and cash in when TradFi joins.
But history tells us that bubbles burst when too many people chase easy profits. With fees rising, share issuance exploding, and companies rushing into Ethereum and Bitcoin, some experts are warning: this looks a lot like the ICO craze of 2017.
That said, others believe the crypto treasury trend is just the beginning of a long-term shift in corporate finance.
Are we witnessing the birth of a new financial model—or a speculative mania dressed up as innovation? The answer may depend on what happens when the market cools down.
One thing is clear: crypto treasury companies are changing the game, and whether you’re an investor or just a curious observer, you’ll want to keep watching.
