Bitcoin Tanks, Then Rallies: Is the Whale Sell-Off Finally Over?

Bitcoin Tanks, Then Rallies: Is the Whale Sell-Off Finally Over?

Bitcoin Rebounds as Galaxy Digital Completes Historic $9 Billion BTC Sale

Bitcoin is showing signs of strength after dipping below $115,000 overnight. As of Friday afternoon, BTC rebounded to $117,200, recovering from a sudden drop that had markets on edge.

The overnight dip was largely attributed to massive selling pressure linked to a Satoshi-era whale wallet. The wallet had been dormant for over a decade, holding tens of thousands of BTC since the early days of the network.

Galaxy Digital Handles Historic Bitcoin Sale

80,000 BTC Sold on Behalf of a Whale Investor

According to Galaxy Digital, the asset management firm completed the sale of 80,000 BTC—worth around $9 billion—on behalf of a long-time investor.

In a statement Friday, Galaxy confirmed the transfer, calling it “one of the largest notional bitcoin transactions in crypto history.” The firm explained that the move was part of the client’s estate planning strategy—a tax-optimized way to rebalance long-held crypto wealth.

While such a massive sell-off initially caused volatility, many traders now believe that the worst of the pressure is behind us.

Was That the Local Bottom for Bitcoin

Technical Analysts Point to a Potential Rally

With the whale offloading complete, analysts are now asking a critical question: Has Bitcoin found a local bottom?

According to John Glover, Chief Investment Officer at Ledn, the answer may be yes. Glover uses Elliott Wave analysis and believes BTC is close to completing its current corrective phase.

“Once completed (either today or over the weekend), I expect that we will complete wave iii by rallying to circa $132,000,” Glover said in a note to clients.

This would mark a significant short-term bullish move and potentially set the stage for new all-time highs if bullish momentum continues.

What Is a Satoshi-Era Whale and Why Does It Matter

Bitcoin wallets that have remained untouched since the early days of the blockchain—often referred to as Satoshi-era wallets—are closely watched by the crypto community. These wallets are believed to have been created or mined by early Bitcoin adopters, and some even speculate a few could be linked to Bitcoin’s anonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

This particular wallet moved $9 billion worth of BTC, triggering alarm bells across trading desks. However, now that the sale has been completed through Galaxy’s institutional channels, the fear may quickly turn into optimism.

Why the Sell-Off Might Be Bullish for Bitcoin

While sell-offs of this magnitude typically create short-term price pressure, they can also remove uncertainty and reset the market for the next leg up. Here’s why the completed transaction could be viewed positively:

  • No More Overhang: Now that the 80,000 BTC has been sold, the fear of additional dumping from the same wallet is gone.

  • Liquidity Absorbed: The market absorbed one of the largest BTC sales in history and didn’t crash—showing impressive resilience.

  • Institutional Handling: The sale was managed by a regulated firm (Galaxy Digital), which may indicate growing maturity in crypto markets.

  • Rotation, Not Abandonment: The seller didn’t exit crypto entirely—it was an estate planning move, not a market exit.

 Bitcoin’s Short-Term Outlook—What Traders Should Watch

Now that the massive sale is out of the way, BTC investors will focus on a few key levels:

  • Support: $115,000 remains a key support zone. A break below could re-test the $110K region.

  • Resistance: Watch $120,000 and $123,500—clearing those could confirm a new rally.

  • Wave Target: Elliott Wave analysis points to a rally toward $132,000 if momentum continues.

BTC has been trading in a tight range for the past two weeks. This consolidation phase, combined with reduced whale risk, could pave the way for a breakout rally.

A New Chapter After the Whale Moves

The completion of this historic $9B BTC transaction removes a huge overhang from the market and may signal the end of a short-term correction.

Galaxy Digital’s role in facilitating the sale shows just how far the crypto ecosystem has come in handling large-scale, high-stakes financial transactions. More importantly, it highlights how Bitcoin is increasingly being used in estate planning, institutional finance, and strategic wealth management.

If John Glover and other technical analysts are correct, we may be about to witness the next big leg up—with Bitcoin eyeing a move beyond $130,000.
