24/7 Stock Trading? Coinbase Pushes SEC to Approve Game-Changing Crypto Move

Coinbase Pushes SEC to Approve Tokenized Stock Trading: A New Era for Wall Street

Coinbase, the largest crypto exchange in the U.S., is making a bold move that could dramatically change how Americans invest in the stock market. The company is asking the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to allow tokenized equities—a modern form of stock trading built on blockchain technology.

This step could put Coinbase in direct competition with platforms like Robinhood, Charles Schwab, and even traditional stock exchanges.

What Are Tokenized Stocks

Tokenized equities are simply digital versions of traditional stocks. For example, instead of buying Apple shares through a broker, you could buy a digital token that represents a share of Apple and trade it on the blockchain.

This method offers several advantages:

  •  Lower fees (no middleman brokers)

  •  Faster settlement times

  •  24/7 global trading

  •  Transparent ownership records on the blockchain

If approved, it could create a whole new way for people to buy and sell stocks—from anywhere in the world, at any time.

Coinbase’s Legal Push for Approval

In an interview with Reuters, Coinbase’s Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal called tokenized equities a “huge priority” for the company.

But right now, U.S. laws don’t allow tokenized stock trading. To move forward, Coinbase needs what’s called a “no-action letter” or “exemptive relief” from the SEC. These are legal green lights saying the SEC won’t take enforcement action if Coinbase launches the service.

Grewal didn’t say if Coinbase has formally submitted a request, but confirmed the company is actively exploring paths forward. He also said institutional investors are hesitant to get involved until the SEC gives clearer guidance.

Coinbase Already Has a Broker-Dealer License

Interestingly, Coinbase actually acquired a company in 2018 that held a broker-dealer license, which is required to offer trading in securities. However, that firm is now inactive, and Coinbase would likely need to reactivate or restructure it to move forward legally.

Global Competitors Are Already Moving Ahead

While the U.S. drags its feet, global exchanges are already testing the waters. Kraken, another major crypto platform, has launched “xStocks” outside the U.S. These allow users to buy tokenized versions of real-world stocks like Tesla or Microsoft in other jurisdictions.

This puts pressure on U.S. regulators. If American companies aren’t allowed to innovate, they risk falling behind in this new wave of financial technology.

A New Direction Under Trump’s Crypto-Friendly Policies

This request also comes at a time when President Donald Trump is reversing the SEC’s hard stance on crypto. His administration has recently dropped several lawsuits against major crypto platforms.

This new climate may give Coinbase the political window it needs to get approval.

If successful, tokenized equity trading could become a massive new revenue stream for Coinbase—potentially even bigger than crypto itself. It also means Wall Street would have to rethink how it operates, as the blockchain takes center stage in retail investing.

What This Means for You

If Coinbase gets the green light:

  • You could buy tokenized Tesla or Apple shares anytime, even on weekends

  • No brokers or trading hours—just a digital wallet and a smartphone

  • Global users could access U.S. stocks without going through Wall Street

  • Younger investors could gain access to fractional shares instantly

However, there are still regulatory and technical hurdles. Security, fraud risks, and investor protections need to be sorted out before this goes mainstream.

Coinbase’s stock price is currently $250.02, down 4.55% in the past 24 hours, possibly reflecting short-term investor caution as the company pushes into this uncertain regulatory space.

But if the SEC says yes, it could unlock an entirely new future for both crypto and Wall Street.

Stay tuned—because the future of investing may soon be just a token away.
